Plant Biotechnology New Products and Applications
Plant Biotechnology: New Products and Applications by J. Hammond, P. McGarvey, V. Yusibov
English | 2000 | ISBN: 3540662650 | 196 Pages | PDF | 5.9 MB
The title of this volume, Plant Biotechnology: Nell' Products and Applications, may look a little out of place among previous vol umes of Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology that have focused mostly on issues related to human health and ani mal biology, However, plant biology has always been of immense and has enjoyed an intimate relationship practical importance, with medicine and other biological sciences for centuries, In creasing scientific specialization and the dramatic advances in the medical and chemical sciences during this century have left many persons with the impression that plant biology and plant bio technology is important only in relation to the agricultural sci ences, This is no longer true. Within the past year a genetically engineered plant virus has been used to vaccinate and protect against an animal disease (see the chapter by Lomonossoff and Hamilton), the first human trials of a potential transgenic plant based oral vaccine against cholera have been conducted (see the chapter by Richter and Kipp), and the first human trial of an injectable transgenic plant-derived therapeutic protein is under way (discussed in the chapter by Russell et al. ). Today plant biotechnology is being used in new and creative ways to produce therapeutic products for medicine and plastics for industry as well as new disease-and stress-resistant crops for agriculture.

Media Matters Race & Gender in U.S. Politics
Media Matters: Race & Gender in U.S. Politics By John Fiske, Black Hawk Hancock
2016 | 362 Pages | ISBN: 1138888192 | PDF | 3 MB
Now, more than 20 years since its initial release, John Fiske's classic text Media Matters remains both timely and insightful as an empirically rich examination of how the fierce battle over cultural meaning is negotiated in American popular culture. Media Matters takes us to the heart of social inequality and the call for social justice by interrogating some of the most important issues of its time. Fiske offers a practical guide to learning how to interpret the ways that media events shape the social landscape, to contest official and taken-for-granted accounts of how events are presented/conveyed through media, and to affect social change by putting intellectual labor to public use. A new introductory essay by former Fiske student Black Hawk Hancock entitled 'Learning How to Fiske: Theorizing Cultural Literacy, Counter-History, and the Politics of Media Events in the 21st Century' explains the theoretical and methodological tools with which Fiske approaches cultural analysis, highlighting the lessons today's students can continue to draw upon in order to understand society today.

Laying Out the Bones Death and Dying in the Modern Irish Novel from James Joyce to Anne Enright
Laying Out the Bones: Death and Dying in the Modern Irish Novel from James Joyce to Anne Enright By Bridget English
2017 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0815635486 | PDF | 3 MB
English sheds new light on death and dying in twentieth- and twenty-first century Irish literature as she examines the ways that Irish wake and funeral rituals shape novelistic discourse. She argues that the treatment of death in Irish novels offers a way of making sense of mortality and provides insight into Ireland's cultural and historical experience of death. Combining key concepts from narrative theory-such as readers' competing desires for a story and for closure-with Irish cultural analyses and literary criticism, English performs astute close readings of death in select novels by Joyce, Beckett, Kate O'Brien, John McGahern, and Anne Enright. With each chapter, she demonstrates how novelistic narrative serves as a way of mediating between the physical facts of death and its lasting impact on the living. English suggests that while Catholic conceptions of death have always been challenged by alternative secular value systems, these systems have also struggled to find meaningful alternatives to the consolation offered by religious conceptions of the afterlife.
